These hands-on, quality-driven operations showed her that small scale can be a strength—sparking her desire to craft exceptional wines in her home region of Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand.
2023 Te Mata 'Awatea' Cabernet Merlot
Awatea takes its name from the historic ship SS Awatea (a Maori word meaning “Eye of the Dawn”) that sailed the Auckland - Sydney - Wellington route in the late 1930s. The Awatea was requisitioned as a troop transport in WWII and was sunk off Algeria in 1942.
2022 Craggy Range 'Te Kahu' Merlot Cabernet
Te Kahu, meaning “the cloak” in te reo Māori, refers to the mist that drapes over our Giants Estate Winery in the Tukituki Valley. Legend tells of this mist protecting a mythical Māori maiden from the sun as she visited her lover, Te Mata. True to its name, Te Kahu is a wine of depth and richness - a Merlot-dominant, Bordeaux-style blend from the Gimblett Gravels
